If using an external mic, examine the connecting cable, or check your Bluetooth settings using a wireless mic. For wired mics, try plugging it into a different USB port. For Bluetooth devices, make sure you have a fully charged battery. Zoom usually requests access to your mic before you join a meeting, but in case you missed it, you can select Join Audio at the bottom of the Zoom window.

If the microphone icon has a line through it in your Zoom window, select the Sound icon to unmute yourself. During a meeting, select the up arrow next to the Microphone icon and make sure the desired mic is active. If you think the meeting host has inadvertently muted you, send them a message in chat and ask to be unmuted.

Ensure you correctly set up your mic in Windows and select the audio input you prefer on Mac. The reason why rebooting resolves computer problems is that it closes any processes that might be interfering with hardware or software.

If you hear an echo, your microphone may be picking up the audio from another source, such as a TV or an external speaker. Remember, if you use the Computer Audio option, that means Zoom is relying on your internet connection to transmit audio.

If your internet connection is not good, your audio will not be good. People on the other end might say you are cutting in and out or that you sound like a robot. To fix this problem, you can either: Use the Phone Call audio option Try moving closer to your wireless router for example, if you are downstairs and the router is upstairs, move upstairs into the same room as the router Try plugging your Ethernet cable directly into your computer rather than into the wireless router.

It might be that an existing connection has claimed your audio. Or, if you want to use a Bluetooth headset, make sure it's properly connected to the device running Zoom. Check the audio source in Zoom: If you're in a call and no one can hear you, you can click on the up arrow to expand the audio button in the Zoom app.

You'll then see the options available on your computer so you can use the correct microphone. Check the audio settings in Zoom: Similar to above, if you're not in a meeting you can open Zoom, open the settings and head to "audio". Here you'll have the option to set your preferences as well as test the microphone and speaker on your PC to see if it's working. If your mic is too quiet, you can turn up the levels here.

My Mac can't access the mic: Sometimes your Mac might say it can't access the microphone and ask you to restart. This might then ask for admin permission.

Entering your details can then correct the mic fault without having to restart. Ensure your PC audio settings are correct: If you've not been able to fix the problem through Zoom itself, then check your settings or preferences on your computer. Above everything else, check they actually work to help isolate the problem.

Background noise is disrupting the call: If there's too much noise around you - people in the house, traffic noise, animals, aircraft, then consider using a noise cancelation app like Krisp. This can cut the background noise so you come across sounding clearer. It can also cut background noise from others on the call, so you don't hear their noise either. Zoom has its own background noise filter too, which you can find in settings. Echo can also occur if you're too close to another person who is on the same Zoom call.

One of the most controllable things you can do to improve audio quality during a Zoom meeting is to check your proximity. Too close to the microphone can make your voice sound muffled and accentuate all sorts of unwanted breathing and saliva noises.

If you sit too far away, you risk being drowned out. If you're using a microphone built into your computer or webcam, you should position yourself within two feet of it. With an external microphone, the ideal position should be about six inches away. Zoom, in its default settings enables a suite of sound enhancements to dumb down background noise. The downside is that using these settings can sometimes make your audio choppy. Alternatively, there apps to access that can work better than Zoom's built-in offering.

If background noise is a problem during a meeting you could try Krisp , an AI-powered noise-cancellation extension for Zoom and other video conferencing apps that can help eliminate background noise from your calls. This works well if you're working in an environment where you can't move your device, and suffer from unwanted noise like traffic sounds or ambient conversation in unavoidable. Successful meetings are dependent on monitoring and troubleshooting.

While Zoom is a reliable video and audio conferencing tool, like all UC tools, you can experience poor video and call quality, as well as usage, service and security issues.

Video and sound quality problems can occur from any device, and with the prevalence of remote working, the problems can become more and more complex. Zoom's out-of-the-box performance management tools won't work in the multi-vendor environment that most enterprises face. Zoom call availability extends across multiple user devices in the office and at home, including laptops, smart phones and mobile devices, desk phones, soft phones, video clients, USB, and audio devices and much more.
